Answering Your Ticket

Most courts in Upstate NY will require you answer your ticket within a 48-hour time period by sending in a plea of "guilty" or "not guilty" to the court. To do so, simply sign the appropriate section of your ticket and mail it in or drop it off in person to the court. Please make sure to follow the specific instructions that appear on the ticket or contact the City Clerk for more information. A plea of "guilty" or a default judgment entered by the court for your failure to answer will result in the assignment of all points, fines, fees, and other penalties applicable to your case. Only a plea of "not guilty" will give you the opportunity to contest the ticket in court or hire an attorney to persuade the court and local prosecutors to offer you a reduced charge which can often mean less or no points, and a lower fine. You can save yourself from accumulating 6 points, at which point New York state requires drivers be assessed an additional fine of $100.00 per year for three years.
